Imagine this: You’ve already chosen your dream university in Australia. The program matches your goals, the living costs fit your budget, and the city feels exactly like your vibe.
But then… you check the university website and— ❌ the application deadline has passed! Or worse— ❌ you haven’t applied for a visa yet, but the semester is about to start.
This situation happens more often than you think. Many future students end up postponing their studies for one full semester—or even a whole year—simply because they weren’t sure when to start their preparation.
So, what’s the solution? Let’s dive into the best timeline for preparing your Student Visa (Subclass 500).

Most Australian universities and education providers have two to three intakes per year:
Semester 1: Starts in February/March
Semester 2: Starts in July
Some institutions—especially VET (Vocational Education and Training)—also offer additional intakes in October or November.
Each intake has different deadlines. Popular universities often close applications early because seats fill up quickly.
Ideally, you should begin your study preparation 8–12 months before your intended start date.
Here’s the recommended timeline:
Research programs and universities
Prepare your documents: passport, diploma, transcript, IELTS/TOEFL/PTE, etc.
Submit your application to your chosen university
Wait for your Letter of Offer (LOO)
Receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) after paying your initial tuition
Begin your Student Visa (Subclass 500) application process
Make sure your visa is already approved
Arrange accommodation and book your flight ticket
Typically 1–2 months, but can be longer depending on your case.
Top universities may close applications early due to limited seats.
If your IELTS/PTE score isn’t ready or doesn’t meet requirements, your application may be delayed.
Applications submitted late in the year may take longer because of holiday closures.
